The sun was setting as we arrived at the stadium, the chill in the air more noticeable with the sun going down. We’d packed light jackets, but it was nothing a little beer couldn’t fix.

“Food then find our seats?” I suggested.

“Sounds good to me,” Austin agreed.

The smells of game day grub wafted through the air, making my stomach rumble as we stepped through the gates and onto the concourse.

“So, what are you two in the mood for?” Kaylee asked. “Nachos, hot dogs, pizza?”

“All three?” Austin grinned.

“And beer.” I nudged my head toward a beer cart with a variety of craft beer selections.

We grabbed our food and drinks, and with our hands full, we headed toward the front-row seats I’d snagged for us. It was only the three of us in our section and as I looked out at the impeccable green field, I spotted Crew in his catcher’s leg guards as he threw a ball back and forth with another teammate.

“Do you see your friend?” Kaylee asked.

I took my seat, placed my beer in the holder, and then pointed at Crew. “Yeah. He’s over there warming up.”

A moment later, he turned and headed toward the dugout we were sitting next to. When he was within earshot, I called out, “Hey, Stratton, good luck tonight!”

His gaze flicked to me and then he balked slightly. “Levi?”

He jogged over to the mesh fence as I stood. “Hey, man.”

“Why didn’t you tell me you were coming?” he asked.

I lifted a shoulder. “Don’t have your number.”

“Well, shit. Let’s change that.”

I pulled out my phone and put in his number before texting him mine.

“How long are you in town?” he asked.

I looked over my shoulder at Austin and Kaylee. “We’re here until Sunday morning.”

“Damn,” he blew out a breath. “We have an off day on Monday.”

“No worries. We know how crazy sports schedules are.” I nudged my head toward Austin and even though the next line was sour on my tongue, I still said, “This is my teammate Austin Butcher and my …” I hesitated for a moment and then smiled weakly, hating I had to refer to her as only mine. “My girlfriend, Kaylee.”

“We met at the ESPYs, right?” Crew asked, as Kaylee gave a little wave.

“Briefly,” Austin replied. “It’s good to see you again.”

“You too,” Crew said. “I need to go get my gear on, but maybe we can catch up next time I’m in Boston?”

“Sounds good to me.” I gave him a head nod, and he headed down the stairs of the dugout.

I sat back down and took a sip of my beer.

A few minutes later, Kaylee spoke around a mouthful of her hot dog. “You know, when I was looking at stuff about Portland, I saw they have two all-male strip clubs. We should totally go.”

My eyes moved to Austin’s as I stuttered, “I …”

“Strip clubs aren’t really my thing. Maybe we just hit up Chrome back in Boston,” he countered.

“I …” I continued to stammer. Being with Austin in private was one thing, but maybe going to a club where we could be ourselves was the next step I needed.
